Our Story

More than just a hotel - it's a legacy hammered into existence

Historic forge interior

Where It All Started

Look, I'll be straight with you - this place wasn't always draped in luxury linens and serving five-star breakfasts. Back in 1887, the Ward family ran one of Whistler's most respected forge operations right here on this very ground.

Thomas Ward and his crew weren't messing around. They crafted tools, horseshoes, and ironwork that literally built this mountain town. The rhythmic clang of hammer on anvil was the soundtrack to early Whistler life.

When we found this property in 2019, the original stone foundations were still standing - scarred, weathered, but solid as the day they were laid. We knew we couldn't let that history just fade away.

The Journey Forward

A timeline of transformation and dedication

1887

The Ward Forge Opens

Thomas Ward establishes the forge that'd become the backbone of early Whistler industry. Local miners, farmers, and builders all depended on the quality metalwork coming outta this workshop.

1923

Golden Era of Craftsmanship

Second generation Ward blacksmiths expand operations. The forge gains regional recognition for decorative ironwork - you can still spot their signature pieces throughout historic Whistler buildings if you know what to look for.

1968

The Fires Go Cold

Modern manufacturing catches up and the forge closes its doors. For decades, the property sits mostly forgotten - used for storage, gathering dust, while Whistler transforms around it.

2019

Discovery and Vision

Our founder, Elizabeth Chen, stumbles upon the abandoned forge while hiking. A hospitality veteran with roots in heritage preservation, she sees something nobody else does - potential to honor the past while creating something entirely new.

2021

Restoration Begins

Two years of careful, sometimes painstaking work. We brought in heritage architects, skilled craftspeople, and yeah - even a few traditional blacksmiths to help us get the details right. Every original stone was catalogued, every timber assessed.

2023

Grand Opening

Aetherion Ward Forge Hotel opens its doors. We kept the original forge building as our lobby and dining space, added luxury suites that blend mountain modern with industrial heritage, and created something we're genuinely proud of.

Today and Tomorrow

We're still writing this story - with every guest who walks through our doors, every event we host, every moment created within these historic walls. The forge fires might be out, but the spirit of craftsmanship lives on.

Built on History, Crafted for You

Every detail tells a story - from reclaimed timber beams to hand-forged door handles

The Architecture Tell-All

Here's the cool part - we didn't just slap some paint on old walls and call it heritage. The main lobby? That's the original forge workshop with 18-inch thick stone walls that've been standing since 1887.

Walk in and look up - those massive Douglas fir beams are original, hand-hewn with marks from tools that don't even exist anymore. We stabilized 'em, treated 'em, but left every scar and imperfection visible. That's 136 years of character you can't fake.

The new suites wrap around the historic core in a design that echoes the forge's industrial lines but with floor-to-ceiling windows that frame Whistler's mountains. Old meets new without either apologizing for existing.

Original stonework
Original Stonework

Every stone in the main building was sourced from Whistler Valley quarries - some travelled by horse-drawn wagon back in the 1880s.

Heritage timber
Heritage Timber

The wood throughout our property tells stories - some from the original forge, others reclaimed from historic BC buildings with their own tales to tell.

Custom metalwork
Forged Details

We commissioned modern blacksmiths to create door handles, light fixtures, and railings using techniques Thomas Ward would recognize.

Elizabeth Chen, Founder

Meet Elizabeth Chen

Our founder didn't stumble into hospitality - she grew up in it. Third generation in her family's Vancouver hotel business, Elizabeth spent twenty years learning every aspect of guest experience before setting out on her own.

"I was tired of cookie-cutter luxury," she'll tell you over coffee. "Places where the story's made up by marketing folks who've never spent a night there. When I found the old Ward Forge, half-collapsed and completely forgotten, something just clicked."

She spent eighteen months researching the Ward family history, tracking down descendants, studying old photographs, and consulting with preservation experts before even thinking about hotel designs.

"If we're gonna invoke history, we better respect it. This isn't a theme - it's a legacy we're honored to continue."

What We Stand For

Authenticity over everything. We don't do fake - not in our restoration work, not in our service, not in how we talk to guests. What you see is what you get, and what you get is the real deal.

Sustainability matters. We're not perfect, but we're committed to preserving what exists rather than bulldozing for convenience. Solar panels on new structures, geothermal heating, partnerships with local suppliers - it's ongoing work.

Community connection. The Ward Forge was built for this community, and we see ourselves as part of that tradition. We support local artisans, source from Whistler producers, and open our doors for community events.
